AIECM3 is an international scholarly association dedicated to the promotion and advancement of research on medieval and modern Mediterranean ceramics. Officially established in 1992 through the initiative of a group of researchers from various Mediterranean countries, the association builds upon a tradition of conferences organized since 1978 focusing on medieval Mediterranean ceramics. Under the leadership of Gabrielle Démians D'Archimbaud, AIECM3 represents the institutional continuation and expansion of the former AIECM2.

The first meeting, held in Valbonne (France), was followed by subsequent congresses in Toledo (Spain), Siena-Faenza (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal), and Rabat (Morocco). During a meeting in Aix-en-Provence (France), the decision was made to formalize these gatherings through the establishment of an international association. Under AIECM2, further congresses took place in Thessaloniki (Greece), Ciudad Real (Spain), Venice (Italy), and Silves (Portugal). At the Silves Congress in 2012, the association broadened its scope to include modern ceramics and adopted the name AIECM3. Since then, congresses have been held in Antalya (Türkiye), Granada (Spain), and Ravenna (Italy), alongside thematic meetings organized in Montpellier (France) and Faenza (Italy).

The association convenes general congresses and thematic meetings on a triennial basis and regularly publishes their proceedings. It also maintains an up-to-date bibliography and an academic discussion platform supported by its members. Currently, AIECM3 comprises 175 members from Mediterranean countries as well as Northern Europe, Asia, and North America. The association is governed by an International Committee composed of representatives from national committees and broader cultural-geographical regions, including the Maghreb, the Byzantine world, and the Near East.

The committee has included distinguished scholars such as the late Graziella Berti, Riccardo Francovich, Iñaki Padilla, and Maurice Picon.
